{"id":974,"date":"2018-10-13T11:08:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-13T05:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=974"},"modified":"2025-01-22T06:25:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T00:55:15","slug":"it-may-or-may-not-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=974","title":{"rendered":"It May or May Not Last"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time around I have decided to give Urdu some time to heal and inflict my first translation upon Kashmiri poetry. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Roziya na roziya<\/em><\/strong> (<em>it may or may not last<\/em>) is a mystical poem by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E0%A4%AE%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%80_%E0%A4%B2%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B2_%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%95%E0%A4%BC%E0%A5%80\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moti Lal Saqi<\/a><\/strong> (1936-1999).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/saqi.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>With the usual disclaimer that my knowledge of (poetic) Kashmiri is quite limited, here goes.<\/p>\n<p><em>This evening of sorrow is a solace<br \/>\nwhich may or may not last<br \/>\nthese curls in the beloved&#8217;s tresses<br \/>\nmay or may not last<\/p>\n<p>why this agitation<br \/>\no devout one?<br \/>\nour breath till morning<br \/>\nmay or may not last<\/p>\n<p>my only boast-worthy possession<br \/>\nis your desire\/well-being<br \/>\nthe beloved&#8217;s gaze is a blessing<br \/>\nwhich may or may not last<\/p>\n<p>i am an infidel<br \/>\nguilty of idol worship<br \/>\nthis vision of the beloved<br \/>\nmay or may not last<\/p>\n<p>you are the sustainer of the universe<br \/>\nthis world is yours to command<br \/>\ndo i deny your bondage?<br \/>\ndeliverance (from sorrow) is all i desire<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>your own heart is your guide to each destination<br \/>\nit need not be beseeched or bribed<br \/>\na shrine within your own self<br \/>\nwhoever may entreat, only the adept reap the blessings<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the late <strong>Anjum Sadiq<\/strong> encountered Moti Lal Saqi during the 1980&#8217;s he asserted that he had dedicated the poem to her grandfather &#8211; <strong>Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed<\/strong>.
