Tonight, however, I am sleepless because I slept away the late afternoon and evening of an unseasonally cold June day. <\/p>\n<p>I realised that I had left these two poems in <a href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Return to The Land of Poems<\/a> unassailed. So here goes.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jab teri samundar aankhon mein ~ Faiz Ahmed Faiz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ye dhoop kinara, sham dhale<br \/>\nmilte hain dono waqt jahan,<br \/>\njo raat na din, jo aaj na kal,<br \/>\npal bhar ko amar,<br \/>\npal bhar mein dhuan,<br \/>\nis dhoop kinare, pal do pal,<br \/>\nhonton ki lapak,<br \/>\nbaahon ki chanak,<br \/>\nye mel hamara jhoot na sach,<br \/>\nkyon raaz karo, kyun dosh dharo,<br \/>\nkis kaaran jhooti baat karo,<br \/>\njab teri samundar aankhon mein,<br \/>\nis shaam ka sooraj doobega,<br \/>\nsukh soenge ghar dar wale,<br \/>\naur raahi apni raah lega<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>When in your ocean eyes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>at dusk<br \/>\nthis edge of sunlight<br \/>\nthis twilight<br \/>\nneither night nor day<br \/>\nnot tomorrow nor today<br \/>\neternal for a moment<br \/>\nevanescent the next<br \/>\nstolen moments<br \/>\nat this sunlight&#8217;s edge<br \/>\nlips springing<br \/>\nlimbs clinging<br \/>\nour union<br \/>\nneither true nor false<br \/>\nno need for secrecy<br \/>\nno need for blame<br \/>\nno need for lies<br \/>\nwhen the evening sun sets<br \/>\nin your ocean eyes<br \/>\nhouseholders will sleep peacefully<br \/>\nand the wanderer shall take to the road<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Farz karo ~ Ibn-e-Insha<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>farz karo<br \/>\nhum ahl-e-wafa ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\ndeewane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nyeh dono baatein<br \/>\njhooti ho afsane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nyeh ji ki bipta<br \/>\nji se jor sunai ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nabhi aur ho itni<br \/>\naadhi humne chhupai ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\ntumhe khush karne ke<br \/>\ndhoonde humne bahaane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nyeh nain tumhare<br \/>\nsach-much ke maikhaane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nyeh rog hai jhoota,<br \/>\njhooti preet hamari ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nis preet ke rog mein<br \/>\nsaans bhi hum pe bhaari ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nyeh jog bijog ka<br \/>\nhumne dhong rachaaya ho<br \/>\nfarz karo<br \/>\nbas yahi haqeeqat<br \/>\nbaqi sab kuch maaya ho<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>just suppose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>just suppose<br \/>\ni may be faithful<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\ni may be crazy<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\neach assumption<br \/>\nmay be a fallacy, a fable<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nmy heart&#8217;s torment<br \/>\nmay have been coerced (from my heart)<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nthere may be more to reveal<br \/>\ni may have concealed one half<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nto delight you<br \/>\ni may have invented excuses<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nthese eyes of yours<br \/>\nmay be actual taverns<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nthis malady, this love for you<br \/>\nmay be a fabrication<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nin the affliction of this love<br \/>\neach breath may be an ordeal<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nthis destined union<br \/>\nmay be an elaborate masquerade<br \/>\nbut<br \/>\njust suppose<br \/>\nonly our love exists<br \/>\nand all else is an illusion<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/sign.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Confession Time:<\/strong> Some sharp-eyed readers have pointed out that Momin Khan Momin&#8217;s couplet in the <a href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted post<\/a> remains untranslated. <\/p>\n<p><em>tum mere paas hote ho goya*<br \/>\njab koi doosra nahi hota<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My excuse\/explanation is that this couplet defies translation (at least by myself &#8211; <em>haath patthar se ho gaye manoos to shauq kooza-gari ka kya kiije<\/em>). <\/p>\n<p>The juxtaposition of &#8216;<em>goya<\/em>&#8216; in an already haikuesque expression opens up a labyrinth of interpretations. <\/p>\n<p>Ghalib&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exaltation<\/a> of this couplet is not accidental. It is the perfect example of Urdu poetry&#8217;s ideal of &#8216;<em>kooze mein samundar<\/em>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>*The word &#8216;<em>Goya<\/em>&#8216; has been explained thus &#8211; <em>&#8216;Goya is an Urdu word that refers to a momentary suspension of disbelief that occurs when fantasy is so realistic that it temporarily becomes reality, usually associated with a story very well told.&#8217;<\/em> There is no exact translation for this word in English. <em>&#8216;So to speak&#8217;<\/em> is an insipid approximation.<\/p>\n<p>P.S : Comments and suggestions are welcome as usual. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Traditionally the insomnia of hot sleepless nights has inspired my attempts at translating some of my favourite poems.
