He authored several collections of poetry, including  Rooms Are Never Finished (2001), The Country Without a Post Office (1997), The Beloved Witness: Selected Poems (1992), A Nostalgist&#039;s Map of America (1991), A Walk Through the Yellow Pages (1987), The Half-Inch Himalayas (1987), In Memory of Begum Akhtar and Other Poems (1979), and Bone Sculpture (1972). He was also the author of T. S. Eliot as Editor (1986), translator of  The Rebel&#039;s Silhouette: Selected Poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1992), and editor of Ravishing Disunities: Real Ghazals in English (2000).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/shahid.jpg\" float=left><\/p>\n<p>          Shahid received fellowships from The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, the Ingram-Merrill Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation and was awarded a Pushcart Prize. He held teaching positions at the University of Delhi, Penn State, SUNY Binghamton, Princeton University, Hamilton College, Baruch College, University of Utah, and Warren Wilson College.<\/p>\n<p>          His poetry is best described by an American contemporary &#8211;  <i> Shahid drew on the lyric poetry tradition of the ghazal while joining it with Western poetic influences, including the sounds and rhythms of the English language. His range of conventions, covering two very different poetic traditions, were truly multicultural &#8211; the result being English language ghazals in which the rich musical pattern, often lost in translation, stood fully revealed :<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\nWhere are you now? Who lies beneath your spell tonight<br \/>\nbefore you agonize him in farewell tonight?<br \/>\nI beg for haven: Prisons, let open your gates-<br \/>\nA refugee from Belief seeks a cell tonight.<\/i> <\/b><br \/>\n <b>(&quot;Ghazal&quot;, The Country without a post office, 1997)<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\nThe late poet James Merrill, a Pulitzer Prize winner, compared Shahid Ali&#039;s poetic works to<br \/>\n <i><b>&quot;Mughal palace ceilings, whose countless mirrored convexities at once reduce, multiply, scatter, and enchant.&quot;<\/b> <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Shahid belonged to a renowned family of intellectuals of Kashmir. Our families used to be connected before the irreversible detonation of the genteel social fabric of Kashmir in the early nineties. <\/p>\n<p>Once after a poetry reading session at our home he asked me what I thought of the poems he had just recited. &#8216;A bit morbid, too many ashes and bones&#8217; I replied with the brutal frankness of youth, much to the chagrin of my mother and the rest of the company. &#8216;Bhaiya&#8217; however was not the least bit put out and graciously presented us with autographed copies of his poetry books, even working &#8216;bones&#8217; into the insciption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones-700x930.jpg 700w, https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones-624x829.jpg 624w, https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/bones.jpg 793w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favourite poem is from one of these books:<br \/>\n <b>The Wolf&#039;s Postcript to &#039;Little Red Riding Hood&#039;<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\n <i> <b>First, grant me my sense of history:<br \/>\nI did it for posterity,<br \/>\nfor kindergarten teachers<br \/>\nand a clear moral:<br \/>\nLittle girls shouldn&#039;t wander off<br \/>\nin search of strange flowers,<br \/>\nand they mustn&#039;t speak to strangers.<br \/>\nAnd then grant me my generous sense of plot:<br \/>\nCouldn&#039;t I have gobbled her up<br \/>\nright there in the jungle?<br \/>\nWhy did I ask her where her grandma lived?<br \/>\nAs if I, a forest-dweller,<br \/>\ndidn&#039;t know of the cottage under the three oak trees<br \/>\nand the old woman lived there all alone?<br \/>\nAs if I couldn&#039;t have swallowed her years before?<br \/>\nAnd you may call me the Big Bad Wolf,<br \/>\nnow my only reputation.<br \/>\nBut I was no child-molester<br \/>\nthough you&#039;ll agree she was pretty.<br \/>\nAnd the huntsman:<br \/>\nWas I sleeping while he snipped<br \/>\nmy thick black fur<br \/>\nand filled me with garbage and stones?<br \/>\nI ran with that weight and fell down,<br \/>\nsimply so children could laugh<br \/>\nat the noise of the stones<br \/>\ncutting through my belly,<br \/>\nat the garbage spilling out<br \/>\nwith a perfect sense of timing,<br \/>\njust when the tale<br \/>\nshould have come to an end.<\/b>  <\/i> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agha Shahid Ali , the most accomplished english-language poet of Kashmir, passed away on 8th December 2001.
