{"id":289,"date":"2010-02-14T00:39:26","date_gmt":"2010-02-13T19:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=289"},"modified":"2020-09-28T09:19:05","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T03:49:05","slug":"return-to-the-land-of-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=289","title":{"rendered":"Return to The Land of Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kashmir is famous for the <i><b>lol*<\/b><\/i> <romantic poetry> of Zooni, its poetess-queen, and <b>Arnimal<\/b>.<br \/>\n<b>Rasul Mir<\/b> and <b>Mahjoor<\/b> <before his metamorphosis into a great revolutionary poet> represent the peak of the romantic era.<br \/>\n*<em>&#8216;Lol&#8217; may be considered a Kashmiri form of &#8216;Lyric&#8217; poetry which is a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>hatyuk rath bu kadha,<br \/>\nnaman tas bu malha,<br \/>\nhekya baar temkui,<br \/>\nsu naazuk athanh peth<\/i><\/p>\n<p>This kashmiri couplet was narrated to me years ago by the late <b>Mohiuddin Shah<\/b>, one of the most outstanding bureaucrats that Kashmir has produced. There is a bit of history associated with it, which I may relate at a later date.  Meanwhile, permit me to attempt a translation:<\/p>\n<p><i>If I slit my throat<br \/>\nto paint my beloveds&#039; nails <with my lifeblood><br \/>\nWould she bear the strain<br \/>\non her delicate hands?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A similar sentiment is echoed in this translation of a Kashmiri poem by <b>Marion Doughty<\/b>, an English traveller to the valley.<\/p>\n<p><i>O that my blood were water, thou athirst !<br \/>\nAnd thou and I in some far desert land,<br \/>\nHow would I shed it gladly, if but first<br \/>\nIt touched thy lips before it reached the sand. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Urdu poetry is a goldmine of romantic imagery. <b>Ghalib<\/b> is said to have offered his <i>Diwan<\/i> in exchange for this couplet by his rival <b>Momin<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>tum mere paas hote ho goya<br \/>\njab koi doosra nahin hota.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Then there is <b>Ibn-e-Insha<\/b> and his Farhad-meets-Freud ballad, <b><i>Farz Karo<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>farz karo hum ahl-e-wafaa ho<br \/>\nfarz karo deewane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo yeh dono baatein<br \/>\njhooti ho afsane hon<br \/>\nfarz karo yeh ji ki bipta<br \/>\nji se jor sunai ho<br \/>\nfarz karo abhi aur ho itni<br \/>\naadhi humne chhupai ho<br \/>\nfarz karo tumhe khush karne ke<br \/>\ndhoonde humne bahaane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo yeh nain tumhare<br \/>\nsach-much ke maikhaane ho<br \/>\nfarz karo yeh rog hai jhoota,<br \/>\njhooti preet hamari ho<br \/>\nfarz karo is preet ke rog mein<br \/>\nsaans bhi hum pe bhaari ho<br \/>\nfarz karo yeh jog bijog ka<br \/>\nhumne dhong rachaaya ho<br \/>\nfarz karo bas yahi haqeeqat<br \/>\nbaqi sab kuch maaya ho<\/i><\/p>\n<p>How about the great revolutionary poet <i><b>Faiz Ahmed Faiz<\/b><\/i> with <i><b>Teri Samundar Ankhon Mein<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>ye dhoop kinara, sham dhale<br \/>\nmilte hain dono waqt jahan,<br \/>\njo raat na din, jo aaj na kal,<br \/>\npal bhar ko amar,<br \/>\npal bhar mein dhuan,<br \/>\nis dhoop kinare, pal do pal,<br \/>\nhonton ki lapak,<br \/>\nbaahon ki chanak,<br \/>\nye mel hamara jhoot na sach,<br \/>\nkyon raaz karo, kyun dosh dharo,<br \/>\nkis kaaran jhooti baat karo,<br \/>\njab teri samundar aankhon mein,<br \/>\nis shaam ka sooraj doobega,<br \/>\nsukh soenge ghar dar wale,<br \/>\naur raahi apni raah lega<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Let me dedicate the last poem to my wife:<\/p>\n<p><b>The Land of Poems* <\/b><br \/>\n<i>For just one glimpse of you,<br \/>\nThe rosebud of your street<br \/>\nHas bloomed anew !<br \/>\nNo songbird there to greet<br \/>\nYour rose, which blooms alone,<br \/>\nBut in that land<br \/>\nOf poems, where have grown<br \/>\nMy roses, and I stand<br \/>\nWithin the shrine<br \/>\nOf secret meanings, hail !<br \/>\nHow every verse of mine<br \/>\nThe nightingale<br \/>\nWill sing, and none destroy<br \/>\nThe ecstasy we share,<br \/>\nHis house of joy<br \/>\nOn heights none others dare. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>* Persian Diwan of Mahmud Gami<br \/>\n(Translation by Nilla Cram Cook) <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/sign.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Update: Translations are available <a href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=489\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kashmir is famous for the lol* of Zooni, its poetess-queen, and Arnimal.
