{"id":1108,"date":"2019-03-17T11:41:51","date_gmt":"2019-03-17T06:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=1108"},"modified":"2019-03-18T21:17:14","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T15:47:14","slug":"the-ides-of-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=1108","title":{"rendered":"The Ides of March"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Ancient Rome the fifteenth of March was a momentous date as on that day in 44 BC <strong>Julius Caesar<\/strong>, having ignored a warning to <em>&#8216;beware the Ides of March&#8217;<\/em>, was assassinated by a group of conspirators. Interestingly the Romans did not number days from the first to the last day of a month but instead counted back from three fixed points of the month: the <em>Nones<\/em> (nine days before the Ides), the <em>Ides<\/em> (the middle of each month), and the <em>Kalends<\/em> (the first day of the following month, and the origin of the word <em>calendar<\/em>). <\/p>\n<p>Happily, in Kashmir the fifteenth of March has a far pleasanter connotation as the day marks the advent of spring.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/harbinger.jpg\" width=300> <\/p>\n<p>As per Kashmiri tradition a year is divided into six seasons of two months each starting from the fifteenth day of the modern calendar:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sonth (Spring) \/ March 15 to May 14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/sonth-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/sonth-2.jpg\" width=300><br \/>\n<strong>Grishm (Summer)\/ May 16 to July 14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/grishm-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/grishm-2.jpg\" width=300><br \/>\n<strong>Wahrat (Monsoon)\/ July 15 to September 14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wahrat-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wahrat-2.jpg\" width=300><br \/>\n<strong>Harud (Autumn)\/ September 15 to November  14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/harud-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/harud-2.jpg\" width=300><br \/>\n<strong>Wandh (Winter)\/ November 15 to January 14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wandh-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wandh-2.jpg\" width=300><br \/>\n<strong>Shishur (Frost)\/ January 15 to March 14<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/shishur-1.jpg\" width=300><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/shishur-2.jpg\" width=300><\/p>\n<p><strong>W. R. Lawrence<\/strong> in his encyclopaedic 1895 book <em>&#8216;The Valley of Kashmir&#8217;<\/em> also informs us of the rural calendar which has twelve seasons.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lawrence : <em>&#8216;It is useful to remember these names, as the Kashmiris are somewhat hazy as to months, and months of agriculturists are usually one month in advance of the official months.
