Lunch & Dinner <\/b><\/p>\n

Ahdoos<\/em><\/b> <\/a>at Residency Road is a perrenial recommendation on this blog (especially off season when freshness of food may be an issue at other places). <\/p>\n

The Liberty Cafe<\/em><\/strong> at Dr Ali Jan Complex on the M.A Road is currently recommended for the ambience, food and quality of service.<\/p>\n

The view at the Taj Vivanta<\/b> <\/a>is to die for. Unfortunately their excellent Chinese restaurant – the Jade Garden<\/em><\/b> – only serves dinner.<\/p>\n

Alternatively you can opt for buffet dinner at the Lalit<\/em><\/b> <\/a>(the erstwhile palace of the Maharaja of Kashmir<\/i>) just off the Boulevard as a high-end option. <\/p>\n

Stream<\/em><\/b> <\/a> and Shamyana<\/em><\/b> <\/a> on the Boulevard are popular but struggle to maintain a consistently high standard.<\/p>\n

Linz Cafe<\/em><\/b> <\/a> on the Residency Road has wholesome kashmiri\/indian food and loads of ambience.<\/p>\n

Amigo's<\/em><\/b> <\/a>opposite Amar Singh College, earlier recommended for oven- fresh pizza and pasta, has upscaled itself to a family-style restaurant. The new Amigo's<\/em><\/strong> restaurant at Hazratbal near the University of Kashmir is also quite popular. <\/p>\n

The Walnut Fudge<\/strong> at the nearby Moonlight<\/em><\/strong> is recommended by no less than a former Chief Minister of J&K.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Cafes <\/b><\/p>\n

The slightly posey menu at The 14th Avenue<\/em><\/b> <\/a> overlooking the Jehlum near the SPS Museum at Rajbagh is offset by the location and friendly service. Plus they have free wifi if you ask nicely. The new 14th Avenue Cafe<\/em><\/b> at Parraypora is recommended.
\nTry a slice of their Blueberry Cheesecake for dessert.<\/p>\n

Cafe Coffee Day<\/em><\/b> <\/a>adjacent to Burn Hall School is always dependable for good coffee in Kashmir. Cafe Coffee Day<\/em><\/b> also has new outlets at the Boulevard, Kashmir University and Nishat.<\/p>\n

Creme<\/em><\/strong> at Ahdoos <\/a>at Residency Road is just a few chairs in a bakery but the location is central and the offerings are always delectable.<\/p>\n

Chinese <\/b><\/p>\n

The Jade Dragon<\/em><\/b> at the Taj Vivanta<\/b><\/a> is the best place for Chinese food.
\nTip: Evenings only.<\/i> <\/p>\n

Lhasa<\/em><\/b> <\/a> on the Boulevard is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Kashmir.
\nTip: Lhasa is excellent for Chinese\/Indian food home delivery.<\/i><\/p>\n

Alka Salka<\/em><\/b> <\/a>near the General Post Office and Knife and Fork<\/em><\/b> <\/a>at Regal Chowk are conveniently located.<\/p>\n

Grilled Tikka <\/b><\/p>\n

Tikka stalls (mutton, chicken & fish<\/i>) at Makai Point<\/em><\/strong> <\/a> on the Boulevard are very popular nowadays. <\/p>\n

Imran Cafeteria<\/em><\/b> <\/a> and other stalls in Khanyar serve good grilled mutton tikka. The skewers are served on a lavassa with a platter of six or seven dips\/chutneys. <\/p>\n

Tea <\/b><\/p>\n

Old-timers and regular visitors to the valley swear by Ahdoos<\/em><\/b> <\/a>at Residency Road. Tea and kababs at Ahdoos are a time-honored tradition. The chicken patty and chutney are simply magnifico<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Fast Food<\/b><\/p>\n

KFC<\/em><\/b> and McDonald's<\/em><\/b> have yet to set up shop in Kashmir, so Bangs<\/em><\/b> <\/a> will have to do. <\/p>\n

Modern Sweets<\/em><\/b> at Karan Nagar have the freshest burgers in Srinagar probably because their buns are oven-fresh.
\nBest as takeaway. However the service is excruciatingly slow.<\/i> <\/p>\n

La Decima<\/em><\/b> is a nearby pizza joint.<\/p>\n

Smokin' Joes<\/em><\/b> <\/a> has a popular pizza home delivery service in Kashmir. Amigo's<\/em><\/b> and Bangs\/Roasters<\/em><\/b> also offer pizza delivery.
\nAlways confirm hourly\/daily offers before ordering.<\/i><\/p>\n

You can't get friendlier service than Parsas<\/b>\/Kathi Junction<\/b><\/em> <\/a>at the Sara City Mall. Plus there is always something going on – book launches, live music shows and the like.<\/p>\n

Grillz<\/em><\/b> <\/a>near Nagin Club and Gulf Royal<\/em><\/b> <\/a>on the Bypass Crossing at Rawalpora are good schwarma joints.<\/p>\n

Vegetarian Food <\/b><\/p>\n

If you insist on pure vegetarian food, Krishna Dhaba<\/em><\/b> <\/a> opposite Cafe Coffee Day at Durganag is the best option. <\/p>\n

Recommended even for non-vegetarians.<\/i><\/p>\n

The nearby Gulab<\/strong> is a fancier option.<\/p>\n

The veg-only Mahatta’s Cafe<\/em><\/strong> on the Bund near the G.P.O oozes old world charm. Plus they have pretty good ice cream.<\/p>\n

Nathu's<\/em><\/b> <\/a>on the Boulevard is an Indian-style eatery that serves passable varieties of a wide range of foods – thali, dosa, sweets, bakery etc. <\/p>\n

Nathu's Rasoi<\/em><\/b> <\/a> near the Main Bus Stand in Pahalgam serves the best South Indian food in Kashmir.
\nHighly recommended.<\/i><\/p>\n

Cafe Log Inn<\/em><\/b> <\/a>in Pahalgam scores high on food and ambience but the staff is surprisingly rude. <\/p>\n

Bakeries <\/b><\/p>\n

Fresh western-style bakery items are available at Jee Enn Sons<\/em><\/b> <\/a>on the Maulana Azad Road. <\/p>\n

Sultan Bakers<\/em><\/b> <\/a>at Dalgate bake an excellent cheesecake. <\/p>\n

Creme<\/em><\/b> at Ahdoos, La Delice<\/em><\/b>, a French-style bakery on the Boulevard and the Just Baked<\/em><\/b> bakery at Rawalpora are new entries on the list.<\/p>\n

Indian-style sweet shops<\/b><\/p>\n

Maharaja Sweets<\/em><\/b> opposite Amar Singh Club in Sonwar and Shakti Sweets<\/em><\/b> <\/a>are popular Indian-style sweet shops in Srinagar. <\/p>\n

Ice Cream<\/b><\/p>\n

Little Hut<\/em><\/b> <\/a> off the Zero Bridge is still my favourite place for ice cream.<\/p>\n

Other ice cream joints are a middling Baskin Robbins<\/em><\/b> stall <\/a> at the Sangarmaal Complex, and Hat Trick<\/em><\/b> <\/a> and Amigo's<\/em><\/b> <\/a>.<\/p>\n

You still cant get a decent hot chocolate fudge<\/i> anywhere in Kashmir<\/del>. Maybe at Mahatta’s Cafe<\/em><\/strong>.
\n Try a Honey Fig<\/strong> cone. Awesome!<\/p>\n

Dessert <\/b><\/p>\n

Katherine Wheels<\/strong> served with thick maple syrup in an old-world setting at Hotel Highlands Park<\/em><\/b> <\/a>are alone worth the journey to Gulmarg. Nothing else comes close.
\nThe fact that Gulmarg is one of the most beautiful tourist spots in Asia helps.<\/i>
\nTry the ‘Benjie Burger<\/strong>‘ too.<\/p>\n

Honorable Mentions<\/b><\/p>\n

Cafe Peerzoo<\/em><\/b> <\/a>on the banks of the Jehlum behind the General Post Office used to be a kind of finishing school for trainees at the Institute of Hotel Management. The food was prepared and served by the students and the quality varied from sublime to passable. These days it is just another government-run facility and the food roulette is history.
\nWorth a visit for the location.<\/i><\/p>\n
