{"id":49,"date":"2017-03-22T19:27:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T13:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2022-06-16T22:00:45","modified_gmt":"2022-06-16T16:30:45","slug":"dragonflies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=49","title":{"rendered":"Dragonflies of Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A short walk up the Zabarvan hills from the Harwan gardens leads to the ancient monuments where the Kushan emperor <b>Kanishka<\/b> held the <b>Fourth Great Buddhist Council<\/b> in the <b>first century CE<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>One summer day as I was standing amongst the ruins of the Great Hall of the Council, I heard a long drawn out <i><b>Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm&#8230;<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p>For the briefest of moments I imagined I was back in Ladakh with long-forgotten Buddhist chants ringing out as clear as crystal in my mind. Startled, I looked up and saw that the sound was being generated by the wing beats of a large dragonfly hovering above my head.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I was not able to identify this particular dragonfly on the wing, over the years I have managed to photograph a number of dragonflies found in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>The first ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/4062393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">checklist<\/a> of dragonflies of Kashmir was published in <b>1898<\/b> by <b>Philip Powell Calvert<\/b>, an American entomologist and a leading authority on odonata at that time.<\/p>\n<p>It is fascinating that most dragonflies that I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/wildlife\/gallery\/fauna\/insects\/odonata\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">photographed<\/a> can be found in this checklist which was based on specimens collected by <b>Dr. W.L. Abbott<\/b> in Kashmir well over a hundred years ago. Lestes barbarus &#8211; The Migrant Spreadwing\/Southern Emerald Damselfly<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wla.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/wildlife\/gallery\/fauna\/insects\/odonata\/MIGRANT_SPREADWING_%28LESTES_BARBARUS%29.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. In 1886 he received a substantial inheritance, gave up the practice of medicine, and travelled extensively around the world. Dr. W.L. Abbott discovered around 40 new species and collected more than 16,000 specimens of birds, mammals, and reptiles in addition to ethnological artefacts and photographs from far-flung corners of the world.
