{"id":42,"date":"2017-03-22T19:07:40","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T13:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=42"},"modified":"2022-06-18T08:53:02","modified_gmt":"2022-06-18T03:23:02","slug":"butterflies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=42","title":{"rendered":"Butterflies of Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Vincent Kollar<\/b>, a famous nineteenth-century entomologist, published the first monograph on the <b><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/kaschmirunddasre02hg#page\/n165\/mode\/2up\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Butterflies of Kashmir<\/a><\/b>* in <b>1840<\/b>. Over the years I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/wildlife\/gallery\/fauna\/insects\/lepidoptera\/butterflies\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">photographed<\/a> most of these butterflies along with other not-so-common species across the valley.<\/p>\n<p>Further lists compiled by British army officers in the late nineteenth century compared with recent studies (and my own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/wildlife\/gallery\/fauna\/insects\/lepidoptera\/butterflies\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">photographs<\/a>) reveal the <b>20<\/b> butterfly species most commonly found in the Kashmir valley (in alphabetical order):<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n1.\tThe Bath White (Pontia daplidice)<br \/>\n2.\tThe Blue Pansy (Junonia orithya)<br \/>\n3.\tThe Common Beak (Libythea lepita)<br \/>\n4.\tThe Common Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni)<br \/>\n5.\tThe Common Copper (Lycaena phlaeas)<br \/>\n6.\tThe Common Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon)<br \/>\n7.\tThe Danaid Eggfly (Hypolimnas missipus)<br \/>\n8.\tThe Dark Clouded Yellow (Colias fieldii electo\/crocea)<br \/>\n9.\tThe Himalayan Cabbage White (Pieris canidia)<br \/>\n10.\tThe Himalayan Silverstripe (Argynnis childreni)<br \/>\n11.\tThe Indian Fritillary (Argyreus hyperbius)<br \/>\n12.\tThe Indian Red Admiral (Vanessa indica)<br \/>\n13.\tThe Indian Tortoiseshell (Vanessa cashmirensis)<br \/>\n14.\tThe Large Cabbage White (Pieris brassicae)<br \/>\n15.\tThe Narrow-Banded Satyr (Aulocera brahminus)<br \/>\n16.\tThe Painted Lady (Vanessa\/Cynthia cardui)<br \/>\n17.\tThe Pale Clouded Yellow (Colias erate\/hyale)<br \/>\n18.\tThe Pea Blue (Lampides boeticus)<br \/>\n19.\tThe Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus)<br \/>\n20.\tThe Himalayan Queen Fritillary (Issoria issaea)<br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>BUTTERFLIES [LEPIDOPTERA]<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. His experiences are recorded in a four-volume work : <b><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/search.php?query=creator%3A%22H%C3%BCgel%2C+Karl+Alexander%2C+Freiherr+von%2C+1795+or+6-1870%22&amp;sort=titleSorter\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaschmir und das Reich der Siek<\/a><\/b>. The second volume described Kashmir&#8217;s history, geography and resources; and in <b>1848<\/b>, the <b>Royal Geographical Society<\/b> awarded von H\u00fcgel its Patron&#8217;s Medal, &#8220;<i>for his enterprising exploration of Cashmere<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On his return, von H\u00fcgel handed over his extensive collection of natural specimens to the foremost specialists of his day. The celebrated Munich zoologist, Andreas Johann Wagner, described the &#8216;<strong>Mammals of Cashmere<\/strong>&#8216; from these specimens while Vincent Kollar, a famous entomologist published a the first monograph on the &#8216;<strong>Butterflies of Kashmir<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>[<em>The Common Yellow Swallowtail image is reproduced courtesy of Wikipedia.
