{"id":175,"date":"2017-03-23T19:09:02","date_gmt":"2017-03-23T13:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=175"},"modified":"2024-04-28T20:49:23","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T15:19:23","slug":"rivers-of-kashmir","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=175","title":{"rendered":"Rivers of Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Hydaspes<\/i> to the ancient Greeks, <i>Bihat<\/i> to the Mughals, <i>Vitasta<\/i> to brahmins and <i>Vyeth<\/i>  to historians, the <b>Jehlum<\/b> is the cradle of civilisation in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/jehlum2.jpg\" width=\"400\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Lawrence<\/b> noted that &#039;<i>Life in the Srinagar city and elsewhere in Kashmir revolves around the river Jhelum<\/i>.&#039; <\/p>\n<p>The <b>Jehlum<\/b> starts out as a leisurely flowing river from the <a href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?p=1591\">immeasurable depths of <b>Verinag<\/b><\/a> and meanders like an immense silver serpent through the valley. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/shankra_1870.jpg\"  width=\"400\"><\/p>\n<p>An engraving in &#039;Letters from India and Kashmir&#039; by J. The caption in the book reads &#039;<i>The curves of the Jehlum, the inspiration for the shawl or pine pattern&#8230;<\/i>&#039;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/pirpanjalx.jpg\" width=\"400\"><br \/>\n<b>Pir Panjal<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During its journey the Jehlum receives tributaries from the <b>Pir Panjal<\/b> and the mighty <b>Himalayas<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>The river then forms a delta as it merges into its personal sea &#8211; the <b>Wular Lake<\/b> &#8211; at one time the largest fresh water lake in Asia. From the Wular the Jehum flows out towards Uri where it forms a raging torrent as it leaves the valley. <\/p>\n<p>Ordinary rivers have three well-defined stages &#8211; <i>rapid flow<\/i> through steep hillsides, followed by <i>meandering<\/i> through plains and finally <i>delta<\/i> formation as the river reaches the sea. <\/p>\n<p>Over the approximately 200-km course of the Jehlum through the valley, the second stage is followed by the third and then the first stage!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/verinag.jpg\" width=\"400\"><br \/>\n<b>Verinag<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Numerous nars (mountain streams), arising from the snowfields of the mountainous ring between the Hansraj, Kaukut and Sundar Kanthi peaks, merge to form the <b>Sandrin<\/b> stream which flows in a north-westerly direction for more than 20 kilometres till it meets the <strong>Verinag stream<\/strong>, a 300-yard canal originating in the <i>Verinag<\/i> Spring.<\/p>\n<p>Near Anantnag the <b>Bringi<\/b> and <b>Arpath<\/b> streams merge before joining the <b>Sandrin<\/b> at Khanabal to form the <strong>Jehlum<\/strong> river. Beyond the town, the <b>Lidder<\/b> river, formed at Pahalgam by the <b>Aru<\/b> stream from the <i>Kolahoi<\/i> Glacier merging with the <b>Chandanwari<\/b> stream originating in <i>Sheshnag<\/i> Lake, flows into the Jehlum.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/aru.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Aru<\/b><\/p>\n<p>At <i>Sangam<\/i> (literally confluence) the mighty <b>Veshav<\/b> from Kousarnag via <i>Aharbal<\/i> flows into the Jehlum after meeting the <b>Rambiara<\/b> stream. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/kousarnagx.jpg\" width=\"400\"><br \/>\n<b>Kousarnag<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/aharbal.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Aharbal<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/veshav.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Veshav<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/rambiara.jpg\" width=\"400\"><br \/>\n<b>Rambiara<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Jehlum then recieves the <b>Sansara<\/b> and <b>Romshi<\/b> near Kakapora before flowing into Srinagar. <\/p>\n<p>This <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/?page_id=180\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> details the journey of the Jehlum through Srinagar.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Srinagar, the <b>Sindh<\/b>, the largest tributary, recieves the <b>Wangat\/Kanaknaz<\/b> stream originating in <i>Gangabal<\/i> and other lakes around <i>Harmukh<\/i> in the <em>Sonamarg<\/em> valley before meeting the Jehlum at <em>Shadipur<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/harmukh.jpg\" width=\"400\"><br \/>\n<b>Harmukh<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/wangat.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Wangat<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Jehlum then flows lazily in and out of the <strong>Wular Lake<\/strong> &#8211; which also receives the exquisitely-named <b>Erin<\/b> and <b>Madhumati<\/b> streams.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the Wular, the Jehlum recieves  the <b>Pohru<\/b> and <b>Ningle<\/b> streams before <em>Baramulla<\/em>. A number of smaller streams like the <b>Boniyar<\/b> stream and <b>Nagdhari Nar<\/b> flow into the torrent before the Jehlum crosses into Pakistan near <em>Uri<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Doodhganga<\/b> and <b>Shaliganga<\/b> streams arise from <i>Sang-e-safed<\/i> in the central <em>Pir Panjal<\/em> range and merge with the <b>Flood Spill Channel<\/b> constructed in 1904 which diverts flood waters from the Jehlum at <em>Shivpora<\/em> towards the <i>Hokarsar<\/i> wetlands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/doodhganga.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Doodhganga<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/shaliganga.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Shaliganga<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Other notable streams flowing in Kashmir are the <b>Sukhnag<\/b> stream near <i>Dodhpathri<\/i>, the <b>Ferozepur<\/b> stream near <i>Tangmarg<\/i>, the <b>Dagwan<\/b> from <i>Marsar<\/i> lake flowing through <em>Dachigam National Park<\/em> and the <b>Arpat Kol<\/b> near <em>Tral<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/ferozepur.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Ferozepur<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/dagwan.jpg\" width=\"300\"><br \/>\n<b>Dagwan<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/rivers.jpg\" alt=Rivers of Kashmir width=\"400\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kashmirnetwork.com\/justju\/images\/sign.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hydaspes to the ancient Greeks, Bihat to the Mughals, Vitasta to brahmins and Vyeth to historians, the Jehlum is the cradle of civilisation in Kashmir.
